Musashi developed a unique style from these deadly struggles, described in brutal detail in Gorin no sho. Hideyoshi himself did not survive to see the second campaign through, as he died in September 1598 with his troops still abroad. Western demand grew for a wide range of pieces such as chargers, vases, boxes, bronze animals and Samurai warriors who proved popular with the Western clientele and in same way they continued to live on through these beautifully crafted pieces.

In addition to dueling, Musashi also participated in several battles, including the siege of Osaka Castle in 1614-1615. Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, who founded the Tokugawa shogunate, were loyal followers of Nobunaga. The innovations of Sōshū swordsmiths in the late Kamakura period allowed them to produce Japanese swords with tougher blades than before, and during the Nanboku-chō period, ōdachi (large/great sword) were at their peak as weapons for the samurai. Those of 6th rank and below were referred to as "samurai" and dealt with day-to-day affairs and were initially civilian public servants, in keeping with the original derivation of this word from saburau, a verb meaning 'to serve'.
