It is a journey of discovery and of rediscovery – of the unknown and the unexpected – charting places unknown and those known as a young teacher 40 years before. He's described some of his experiences, both in his early novels and in books such as Sir Vidia's Shadow (see our review).

This book chronicles a journey of discovery and rediscovery, not only of the unknown and unexpected, but also of people and places he first got to know forty years before.

Armchair travelers will wish the book went on twice as long -- and that is something, considering that the book runs more than 400 pages.

After that comes South Africa, and despite being the most prosperous country in Africa,it is still crime infested.

But he fails to see how his criticism - that Western aid depends on melodrama, and is ultimately self-serving - could also apply to himself. He wonders about the aid phenomenon, and concludes (several times) "the whole push has been misguided". Going by train, dugout canoe, "chicken bus," and cattle truck, Theroux passes through some of the most beautiful — and often life-threatening — landscapes on earth. Paul Theroux’s books include Dark Star Safari, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, Riding the Iron Rooster, The Great Railway Bazaar, The Elephanta Suite, A Dead Hand, The Tao of Travel and The Lower River.

Theroux's view of humanity is becoming increasingly bleak even as he stretches his reach with this novel that brilliantly depicts the world as it may become. I know and have traveled in Africa, so I can proclaim with admiration that Theroux, the disheveled, often grumpy, sometimes euphoric sojourner who shares his latest adventures in Dark Star Safari, is an intrepid traveler worthy of the reputation that precedes him. And try as he might he can't be your average backpaker either: a world-famous author he (as usual) stumbles across people reading his books, and looks up old friends like the Prime Minister of Uganda and Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer (and he also visits another Nobel laureate, Naguib Mahfouz). In the course of his epic and enlightening journey, wittily observant and endearingly irascible Paul Theroux endures danger, delay, and dismaying circumstances. Ultimately, though, what saves "Dark Star Safari" from being a long gasp of disillusion, is his meditations on aging. A conversation with a landmine specialist in Khartoum leads him to state that "not much has been written on the subject of landmines". And this, without a phone or blackberry, not as a 25 year old or a 34 year old (Great Railway Bazaar), but at the age of 60…!
